We are all familiar with the three R’s of reading, writing, and arithmetic. These are the basics of education. In addition to these three very important subjects, the “fourth R” is responsibility, which is also basic to the learning process.

Students who take responsibility for their own learning at home and at school don’t have to be nagged or cajoled to complete their homework or to go to school, because they are self-motivated and self-directed. Responsible students are well-disciplined, make good choices, and are conscientious and resourceful. They don’t quit easily and refuse to blame others.

These valuable traits are not inherited, they are taught. Teaching students to take responsibility for their learning and their actions must be learned. Here are some ways you can help your student develop a responsible attitude.

Responsible people plan their day. Assist your child by getting them a calendar and setting a daily and weekly schedule. This way they will develop time management habits which will assist them for years.
Responsible people set goals. You can help your child set goals by discussing the importance of having goals. Begin with a small goal such as reading a chapter a day in their Bible or a chapter book. Write the goal and post it where your child will remember the goal. Check with your child daily as to their progress. Add goals slowly and increase the level of responsibility of your child.
Responsible people solve problems by using a process. Work with your child as they enco7unter difficulties. Help them decide what the problem is, generate several possible solutions, evaluate the solutions, decide on a solution and develop a plan to make the solution work.

Use these tips to help your child develop the “fourth R”: Responsibility. Your time working to improve your child’s focus on time management, goal setting and problem solving will pay dividends as he or she moves through school and into adulthood.

"Speaking of Lansing Christian School"

With the generosity of the mortgage being paid off such a blessed announcement it is appropriate to discuss the things that I am thankful for this year. I am very sure that I speak for the rest of the staff also, that I am thankful to the Lansing Christian School community and association members for our beautiful school. It is wonderful to come to school each day and be amazed at the functional beauty of our school. I am thankful for the teachers and staff members who give their all each day for our children. I am thankful for the cooks who lovingly prepare food for our hungry growing youngsters.

I am thankful for the students who attend LCS, bringing with them enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. I am thankful for our coaches and athletic director who give a multitude of time to our students helping them learn more than just the game – helping them to learn teamwork skills which will last a lifetime and who encourage our student athletes to excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. I am thankful to our maintenance and custodial crew who keep things “ship-shape” and never complain about cleaning up the classrooms or the hallways. I am thankful for the ladies who run our growing after school program, allowing working parents to have a safe, secure environment for their child after school. I am thankful for our aides who watch the children on the playground and assist them in the classroom, making sure they are safe while they enjoy their recess activities and give them extra attention as they learn new concepts. I am thankful for our secretaries who work well with parents, teacher, students and staff and stay calm even in the midst of chaos.

I am thankful for the student athletes who work diligently to keep current with their studies and represent Lansing Christian School with pride. I am thankful for our student musicians who practice their instruments, honing their skills to provide us with their best musical renditions. I am thankful for our wonderful choir and art students who produce beautiful music and terrific art. I am thankful for our students involved in student leadership activities through the National Honor Society and class officer positions.

I am thankful for our administrators who work with our teachers and staff to continuously improve LCS. I am thankful to our technology crew who keep our computers on line and our school moving towards the best in technology. I am thankful for the librarians who work with students with patience, encourage students to read great books, and keep our teachers up to date on the electronic resources available to enhance education for our students.

I am thankful for our bus drivers who value our student’s safety and greet our children with a smile and a kind word. I am thankful the members of the LCS Association who support LCS by attending athletic events, volunteer in various capacities, and are willing to purchase fundraising items to support opportunities for our students. I am thankful for our LCS school board members who give their time, never complaining and continually work to make Lansing Christian School a Great Place to Learn. I am thankful for the folks who work in the Main Office, they keep our teachers and staff members informed, keep the school financially organized, and work with the utmost in professionalism.

Welcome to Lansing Christian School. Our excellent teachers and terrific staff members have been praying and planning to enable them to deliver a high level of excellence in Christian Schooling to your child.

We are Created for a Purpose. This year we are working together to discover more about the promise we are given in Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” God has brought us together to further His plan. By working together, we can accomplish God’s purpose.

Through the Bible we see many examples of our theme: “Created for a Purpose.”

David, who was about the age of many our youth, used his skill with a slingshot to defeat Goliath and save the nation of Israel from enslavement and devastation by the Philistines. Joseph, who was a teenager when he was sold into slavery, fulfilled his purpose by rising to political heights as the countries’ second in command and saved his family, the forefathers of the nation of Israel, from starvation and demise. Esther is another example of our theme “Created for a Purpose.” When she was just a youth, she was whisked away to enter the most amazing contest. The winner would become the Queen! After becoming queen, Esther was able to use her influence with the King to save the nation of Israel from annihilation.

Being “Created for a Purpose” transcends the ages as we delve into contemporary examples of real people like us.

Billy Graham is a shining example of a modern day individual being created for a purpose. He has led great waves of revival across the world. Jonas Salk, who discovered the polio vaccine which has saved thousands of children from contracting the deadly virus, was certainly created for a purpose. Another example of being created for a purpose is Sir Alexander Fleming who is credited with developing Penicillin which has saved millions of lives since 1928.

Art Bolt and Jim Bowden, who along with many other Lansing area Christians, put in long days to help build and develop Lansing Christian School.

Each one of us has been created for a very special purpose. We may not save our nation like David, Joseph and Esther, become a world renown evangelist like Billy Graham, be credited with discovering a miracle medicine or vaccine like Salk and Fleming, or help to build and develop a Christian School like Art Bolt and Jim Bowden, but we all have an opportunity each day to witness and spread the good news of Jesus Christ to others.

Like David, each one of us will cross many giants in the form of not only adversaries and bullies, but critical life changing decisions we must make as we strive to decipher our Godly purpose.

Everyday we have the opportunity to positively or negatively have an influence on the lives of others. It doesn’t matter what age you are or where you are in your Christian walk; you have the opportunity to be a positive force from Christ. God can and will do great things not only in your life, but in the lives of others through your testimony. We must make a choice every day to live for Christ fully and further his ministry.

Because you have been “Created for a Purpose,” through Christ Jesus you can make a difference every day of your life.

Back to School!

Back to School time is a busy time for families. In the midst of the hustle and bustle of getting out the door in the morning, there are many items which may be ignored or accidentally forgotten.

Preparing for a successful daily experience takes preplanning. Preparation for the next school day begins when your children arrive home from school. Below are some hints to help get your school day off with out a hitch!

• Clean out backpacks each afternoon. This gives you an opportunity to read any notes, recycle lunch containers, and confirm whether your child has homework.
• Do homework early. If your children wait until their evening activities are finished, it may be difficult to complete their homework on time. If your child completes their homework early, you may want to have a special treat to reward them.
• Pick out clothing for the following day. By choosing what they will wear the following day, you avoid the lost shoe crisis and help to ensure a smooth exit from the house in the morning.
• “Brown-baggers” should pack lunches in the evening. By preparing lunches the evening before, everyone gets to help decide what they will eat for lunch. Children purchasing lunch at school will want to put money in their lunch account ahead of time.
• Choose an appropriate bedtime for your children. Each child is different; some children need to go to bed before 8 pm, others may be able to stay up later. One way to know if your child is getting enough sleep is to watch how well they function in the morning or talk to their teacher, then adjust their sleep accordingly.

Getting the day off to a smooth start begins at home and carries over to your child’s performance in school. By avoiding hectic, rushed mornings, your child will be more successful!
